So this photo has been far too long in the making. I’ve been in love with loons for as long as I can remember. They are the epitome of the Canadian wilderness. I photographed this loon couple at 10:45pm on the longest day of the year. The light was fading but turned to a beautiful warm hue to light the trees and loons with orange. Which just happens to be my favourite colour. The next task, is capturing behaviour!

When I headed back to the Rapids of the Drown on the Slave River for some evening lit pelicans I was treated to a wonderful sunset as well. I love photographing sunsets and I love to avoid silhouettes. I often photograph at sunset and shoot anywhere but in the direction of the sun. During the summer time in the north, the sun sets more northerly than any other direction (if it sets at all). I used a bracketed exposure separated by 2/3 stops so I could capture the whole tonal range of the sunset and used editing software to blend the three images into one. This one image features all the tonal ranges from the three bracketed exposures.
